Posers

Wow, so you're all slackers.

Luckily, I'm here to dust off this little blog with a pretty nice update for those of us who live in the middle of nowhere and can't get to a lifedrawing class.

http://www.posemaniacs.com/pose/thirtysecond.html

Not the same, of course, but a pretty good substitute.

I've left it at 30 seconds over the past couple days, but I figure I'll move it up since I like some of the poses it comes up with.

This here is about 3 sessions of 5-10 minutes twice a day.

Progress?

Look at that, an update! I did it! I updated!
Anyways, this here is some stuff I've been working on. There was a colorist who recently emailed me and wanted some new line art to work on. Sadly, I didn't have anything new and exciting in my gallery at the time so he had to settle.

This is my attempt to get off my ass and see to it that doesn't happen again.
Top one is a "so far" for an X-villains pin up that is going to take me forever.
The other 2 are the Booster Gold pin up. Original roughs and "finishes'. Another version (not pictured) has some panets circled in for a more spacey-ish feel.

I'll let the colorist decide.

What is best in life...?

More half-done crap! Woohoo!

At least this one has a little more meat on its bones.

Anyway, throwing this guy up here, as it's what I have at the moment. Hopefully, in the not-too distant future I'll be posting the finishes of these. Trying to build some momentum!

Comment away, Suckpumps!

Yeah, I'm a slacker. Been slammed by this whole "Real Life" thing. Kids: whoda thunk they'd be so needy?

Anyway, from time to time a get a few minutes and start scribbling a little. Mostly this amounts to endless headshots, hands, monster parts, etc.

This is a Grey Knight from the Warhammer 40K game (NEEERDD ALERT!). Hoping to get this thing up to inks at some point.

Sorry for the crummy scan, but still working with that crap beast at work.

Anyhow, gimme some thoughts before I work this up further. (Yeah, because you don't have like, all the time in the world before that happens! ;P)

The link is included now instead of the embedded video because im pretty sure the other one doesn't work!

Everyone has one week...to do what?

To design a sweet poster as if there were going to be a full length Whip Master movie...

I know its a short one, so it doesnt have to be anything fancy, i just want to bring some fresh blood to this dying site, and since i was just thinking about this sketch this morning, and happened to find it online, i think its perfect for this kinda thing!

ONE WEEK, JERKS! May 21st!

More Comic Whatevers...

So, i think i'm FINALLY pulling out of my horrible comic art burn out, and i think i figured out why!

All this time i was working on stuff for clients and some of them put SO much pressure on every single detail of the artwork that they were missing the point. They had always missed the point. The school was trying to beat it into our heads for 3 years, and even I lost sight of it. But thanks to actually READING comics again, i figured it out.

STORY TELLING

Yeah, i know...the most obvious thing in the entire universe! The art has to do its job, and doesn't have to be perfect, that's just a bonus if it is! But obviously the average person, and even the average art nerd (speaking for myself obviously) doesnt look at a panel for longer than it takes to read the dialogue, and in a lot of cases actually spends more time ON the dialogue than paying attention to the details. I tried telling this to clients...clients that wanted to go over every panel line for line, but they wouldn't pay attention. They wanted to get the absolute best picture for their money, which, i cant say as i blame em for it. But they weren't looking at the BIG picture! They were looking at huge 300dpi scans of 11 by 17 inch pages, panels that on the monitor were easily 5 to 6 times the size of what they would look printed! Hell even on the page, or at 72dpi its still almost 2 times the size! and that's still without color, ink, and lettering to fill it all out!

Now, i mean the following as no knocks to any artists: BUT, i've gotten back into POWERS and have been re-reading the image years and now i'm onto the icon stuff...those last few months at image, man the artwork in those is SO RUSHED, but the pacing, the storytelling, so on point! And there's a couple glory shots along the way, which is what most people would remember anyways. Oeming is SO good at that. And Bendis writes so many words, you probably dont even need artwork to fill a page...so maybe thats a bad example! But the story works, what i remember is the STORY, the combination of everything, the finished product! It's some of the best comics i've ever read! Same with Blankets. Blankets was great, the guys an amazing artist to boot, but he has his flaws like everyone else, and i don't get hung up on them. It doesnt take me OUT of the story, or make me wish i hadnt paid money for it. I also read FURY peacemaker, by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The art in that book...well lets just say its nothing i would ever really find appealing. But again it all comes together and who really sees it long enough to care? The guy knows how to get it down on paper, and how to make the story flow and who cares if he uses too many hatch lines, or draws every tooth in someones face? I don't.

So right now i'm kind of in this great head-space where flaws don't really concern me that much. I don't care if something small is slightly off, or if it looks perfect flipped over on a light-box. And when i don't worry about that kinda shit, i think the mistakes actually happen LESS and i can continue to make progress on pages instead of leaving the same one on my desk for weeks just KNOWING that i have to make that face better...but not wanting to try since i did it 80 times prior.

I hope this actually makes some sense to you guys, and if anyone IS having the same kinda problems as i was/am having about being overly self critical, that this actually helps! And if you guys have any other tips to get over being burnt out, or blocked, feel free to drop em in the comments.

Craig Thompson

Recently I've been actually READING comics again, thanks to a comicon with an extremely cheap graphic novel table! Because of that, I've read an amazing graphic novel that i think you guys all need to know about.

The story is genuine and realistic, and the art is ridiculous! It's all written and drawn by Craig Thompson, and i've been checking out his blog. When he DOES post its really good info about his process or updates on his next giant project Habibi.

If you guys need some inspiration or are just looking to see how another professional does it, you should check out his site at www.dootdootgarden.com or his blog at http://blog.dootdootgarden.com

And of course, go read the book!
Don't let the thickness scare you! (sorry, i just always wanted to say that)

"Better late than never!"

OK, so i did two pictures cause i couldn't really decide. I did one regular gb and one REAL Ghostbusters. This is the one that i finished, I'm kinda wrestling with the other one, so i may or may not finish that. Hopefully i will though.

I tried to match the cartoon style as close as i could. That was kinda my goal for this piece. I Purposefully tried to make it semi-cheesy so that if i were to color it and add the logo, etc, then it might look like a cover of one of the old RGB comics, or the magazine from when i was a kid.

Anyways, sorry for the lateness and everything! Hopefully my regular GB one will get finished also, but if not, at least there's this one!

Stay puft

My girlfriends son wanted in on the action, so he drew stay puft a few times... he kept drawing the hat first, then the head, and would be mad cuz he drew the head too small for the hat, so he'd start over. The little mans head is ray, he's scared.
Tear this one apart Eric! Are you tough enough to make a 5 year old cry?!?!

Scott Pilgrim

OK, so lets face it, the books ARE amazing as shit! And now the trailer for the movie is out, and of course it looks amazing as shit! So check it out! Its pretty inspiring in itself, AND plenty of comic book throwbacks for people who haven't read the books, which you should all do immediately after viewing this. It's gonna be a long wait for the last book in July and even longer til the movie in August, but this can tide you over for a while!

Are You A God?

Looks like I'll be leading the charge this time.
Trying to make up for being a loser with the first challenge.
This is how I get out of drawing a bunch of dudes with reference heavy tech.
Suck on that!

PS: I'll get the first challenge up soon, I swear.

CHALLENGE 2: "...I remember Revelations 7:12..."

"And I looked, and he opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake. And the sun became as black as sack cloth, and the moon became as blood."
"And the seas boiled and the skies fell."
"Judgement Day."
"Judgement Day."

OK, so, if you have known me longer than 30 seconds, you may know that my all time favorite anything is Ghostbusters. Best Movie, Best Childhood Cartoon, Best Franchise, Best Logo, Best Characters, Best Uniform, The list goes on for miles...hell, you can even add best new movie based video game to the list.

Long Story Short...Since my name isn't going to come up anytime soon again on this list, (and if i WERE to choose J. Edgar Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover will appear and destroy us)...the traveler has been chosen...and the puns and references come to an end.

CHALLENGE 2 is GHOSTBUSTERS, be it the REAL Ghostbusters, GB 1 OR 2, however you wanna handle it. Lets see some GB Pinups slapped up on this board between now and April 6th.

So I'm giving you guys 3 weeks, Trying to maybe ease it down from a month, but not quite jump into a 2 week time frame so soon (although feel free to choose however long you want for your own challenges)

So RECAP...and the STATS for the people who don't want to read me ramble on and on:

CHALLENGE 2: GHOSTBUSTERS
MEDIUM: ANY
DEADLINE: APRIL 6th 2010

New Challenge...Coming Soon...Official Rules??

OK, so things are Dead in the water right now it seems...so here's how I'm thinking about this. I'm going to assign challenge ideas to a certain order. March is halfway over and there are still some Skeleton pictures in the works I am assuming, and just because we move onto some OTHER project, that doesn't mean you can't post YOUR picture later. So, for all of those who didnt meet the deadline and who have something half finished on your art table, feel free to finish it when you get around to it and post it up. In the meantime though, we need to get moving on this.

So i'm going to choose Skeletons in a random order for the assignments. When it's your turn to assign a subject/theme, you choose the deadline...that way if its something basic we don't have to wait an entire month for something new to pop up, or if its more complex, then you can allot more time to it, etc etc.

So the basics are:

I. You know ahead of time when its your turn to choose a subject.

II. You will have 48 hours from the previous deadline to post the subject and deadline (feel free to specify a medium too if you choose...the more specific the better I think)

III. If you don't WANT to choose or cant think of anything you can just pass on it and the next person in line will choose a subject. But, lets be honest, 48 hours is a long time to choose something and it can be as vague or specific as you want, so, not that big of a deal i would think.

OK, HERE GOES...THE ORDER IS:

1. Me
(I'll choose the next subject to get the ball rolling)
2. Fernando
3. Brad
4. Cory
5. Dave
6. Chris
7. Abe
8. Brett
9. Bob
10. Chad
11. Jeff
(since Jeff chose the last one i figured i should shove his ass on the end, for fairness sake)

If anyone has any advice or ideas about this please feel free to mention it in the comments or send me an email...I just think that if this was a little more organized things might move a little faster.

Other ideas that i was thinking of might be random 48hr subjects that anyone can pop on here anytime they wish. So, say all of a sudden you are super into the flash or something, you can post a 48 hour challenge and see what happens.

Also, are people comfortable with the list like this? or would you prefer to just have me or jeff or something choose a subject and put it up once a month and roll with it? I thought you guys might prefer a system where everyone gets a chance to choose something every now and then.

Hopefully this helps! Keep checking the board, and keep posting, and look for a new challenge in the next 24-48 hours!

My Radioactive Skeleton Project.

Ok, so i was kinda debating what to do for a long time and instead of fighting it any longer i did this, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. Its a little basic, but thats why i colored it...you know...to DISTRACT...I may have went a little over kill with the Screen effect in photoshop at the end though, but whatever. I also wish the background wasnt so plain, but I couldn't decide what to put back there, maybe a falling skyline or something, but let's face it, it's the day AFTER the thing was due. So here it is!

Can't wait to see the rest!

**Also I'm trying to work on a good way to keep the momentum going on the site, i have a few ideas but if you have some too, email em to me, cause the site's still a work in progress, and any input is appreciated!

Nando's Okay!

Hey Gang,

Don't know if all of you have seen the news last night, but there was a major earthquake down in Chile overnight. 8.8 on the scale! Not too far from Santiago, as a matter of fact.

Well, looks like Fernando and his peeps are okay!

I'm just posting this since I know some of you don't have Facebook accounts.

I'm sure he'll stop in here once he's gotten his world squared away some.

Just thought you'd all want to know.

inspiration...

I found this sketchblog a couple of weeks ago, and I think you guys might dig it.

http://comictwart.blogspot.com/

A bunch of awesome artists (Mike Hawthorne, Andy Kuhn, Ramon Perez , etc) with weekly subjects and such. And they update at least once a day during weekdays, so it's really sweet if you wanna waste a few minutes at work everyday.

Maybe you guys know about this, but I figured I'd pass it along anyways, since it's pretty damn cool.

Laters!

Skeletons?!? I thought it'd be full of pizzas!!

Since the skeleton thing got kickstarted and I was home sick from work, thought I'd give it a try, I actually did the skeleton part and a big logo, but I inked the logo with sharpie pens since I thought it wouldn't bleed... but it just doesn't bleed THROUGH, and it didn't look so hot, then I got the geiger counter idea, so drew them seperately and photoshopped em together, I cleaned up the text a bit so its legible. if I get the time I may print it out and ink it... or trace it and color it or something, but no promises since I'm just as busy ( lazy ) as the rest of you! haha

kirby crackle is the shit

Hey guys thanks for the invite!
This is an awesome way for us all to share artwork and other junk- glad to be a part of it!

Now you don't have to settle for reading the shampoo bottle, just bring your laptop to the bathroom with ya...

Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know I re-started working on my online GN after a looooooong long time of not doing it (alcohol can derail a young artist).
Anyways, you guys can check it out for free at http://warpedcomic.wordpress.com/
There'll be weekly updates of 1 to 3 pages every week (depending on my workload), so keep checking back soon.

That's about it... now draw me some skeletons, dammit!

Peace!

Some process...

I was asked by my friend Chondra Sanchez if I could do a quick turnaround on an image for the Kill-Audio trade. It was a profile style picture for a Dear Abby like column staring "Billy Toucan Fandango". 'A tweaked out former street hustler turned celebrity talk show host and life coach.' He's only mentioned in the comic so I got to come up with his design. She asked to have him "tweaking out" in the photo.

The initial sketches. (I liked the first one more...but so it goes...)

After this stage they asked if I could make him more flamboyant and add the sunglasses like that gay guy in the hit 80's movie Mannequin.
Once approved, I set out to add gray tones and voila.

Wassssssup!

Hey guys! how's everybody doing?Greetings from the land down under. No, the other land down under.
Thanks for inviting me!
It's nice to actually draw a little for fun. Hadn't done that in a while.
Here's my entry to this months challenge! He's all radioactive and such. Hope you guys dig it!

New sample page! ( 1 of 3 )

Hey guys, Eric got me a book for christmas that has a bunch of different 3 page scripts in it, and it shows different comic artists doing them and describing thier process, so I figured I'd pick one of the scripts and try it myself, so here's the first page of it.

Well..maybe not...but you won't know!

...the hell?

Welcome to the jungle, Slumlords!

Eric thought it'd be a good idea for us to have a place to quickly post up, and cut down, artwork. Foolishly, I agreed.

So here we are: Radioactive Skeletons! (Cool name, Brad.)

To make things simple, we were thinking of having a monthly drawing challenge. You have one month to draw an illustration based on the assigned subject matter. You can take it as far as you want, but finished pencils is the minimum.

Kicking it all off, we have our first challenge: RADIOACTIVE SKELETONS!
Creative, no?
It can be whatever you want; classic pin-up style illo, a page of sequentials featuring said skeletons, or even a logo for the site! The goal is to have some fun while exercising those drawing chops!

So, since we are still getting folks to sign-up, we'll shoot for this one to be due at the end of FEBRUARY. Meantime, post up what you feel like, any art you're working on, and let's get the ball rollin'!

Friday, January 8, 2010

The humble beginnings of Mount Olympus must have been like this:

This is the future home for Radioactive Skeletons to post their wasted talents for the world to mock... Or at least so we can brag about which skeleton is by far the best, and how we all knew them before they forgot about the rest of us so they could make it big...and subsequently let us sleep on their couch while we are in the various "transitional" phases of our lives.
Mostly X-Kubies and long term art/comic nerds need apply.
If you would like to be a Radioactive Skeleton, either get a plutonium marrow transplant, or email me and we might be able to work something out.
PS...bribery is wholey accepted...and even ENCOURAGED. Keep that in mind.
